Meet Robert Casey, Vital Lnu'k Excellence Award Winner. Robert exemplifies resilience, cultural pride, and a deep commitment to his community and family. A proud L’Nu from Eskasoni, Robert began his academic journey at Cape Breton University in 2009 as a Rosetti Scholarship recipient. Despite excelling in the Bachelor of Science program, he paused his studies to care for his parents during a family health crisis, prioritizing family values central to Mi’kmaq culture.
Encouraging his wife, Riviera, to continue her education while he worked to support their family, Robert's dedication to education remained steadfast. In 2019, he re-enrolled at CBU, shifting to a Bachelor of Arts with the goal of pursuing social work. Inspired by his passion for helping others, particularly youth facing challenges, Robert completed his degree in 2022, proudly showcasing his Mi’kmaq heritage by beading an Alumni pin and a CBU Medallion for himself for the Indigenous Graduation Ceremony. Robert’s beading work with his wife has created dozens of alumni pins, a gesture of cultural celebration and community support. Now pursuing a Bachelor of Social Work at St. Thomas University, Robert is committed to making a lasting impact as a community leader. His journey of perseverance and cultural pride embodies the spirit of the Vital Lnu'k Excellence Award. |
Morgan Toney |
Meet Morgan Toney, Vital Lnu'k Excellence Award Winner. Morgan, a Mi'kmaq fiddler and singer, has transformed the musical landscape of Atlantic Canada by blending Mi'kmaq and Cape Breton Celtic traditions into a unique style he calls "Mi’kmaltic." His debut album, First Flight, reimagines traditional songs like "Ko’jua" and the "Mi’kmaq Honour Song" while addressing contemporary issues through originals like "The Colour Red," a powerful call to action on missing and murdered Indigenous women. Through his music, Morgan celebrates his language, heritage, and a vision for justice and understanding.
Despite taking up the fiddle only a few years ago, Morgan’s extraordinary talent has earned him a Juno nomination, four East Coast Music Awards, and performances alongside legends like Ashley MacIsaac and Jimmy Rankin. A student at Cape Breton University, Morgan is determined to return to Wagmatcook First Nation to teach Mi'kmaq youth the fiddle, carrying forward his family’s musical legacy and fostering the next generation of musicians. Morgan’s work connects cultures, preserves heritage, and inspires change. His dedication to his community and innovative artistry embody the spirit of the Vital Lnu'k Excellence Award, making him a true ambassador of Mi'kmaq culture and a vital force for collaboration and celebration. |

Meet Kitpu Aviation, Vital Lnu'k Excellence Award Winner. Kitpu Aviation, Canada’s first majority Mi’kmaw-owned aviation company, has become a transformative force in Atlantic Canada since its founding in 2023. A partnership between Breton Air and Wagmatcook First Nation, Kitpu serves as the fixed-base operator for ground services at McCurdy Sydney Airport, offering essential services that range from emergency response to commercial aviation support.
The company has played a vital role in Nova Scotia’s emergency management, conducting an aerial search for a missing Eskasoni resident and assisting with fire suppression and evacuations during a blaze on Mniku Island in Potlotek First Nation. Beyond emergency response, Kitpu contributes to industries like mineral exploration and provides ground handling services for Cape Breton’s newest airline, Pascan Aviation. Committed to community and workforce development, Kitpu Aviation prioritizes youth employment, with nearly half its employees under 40, including a young pilot gaining experience locally and a mechanic returning to Cape Breton. Led by Chief Norman Bernard, Kitpu fosters meaningful careers and supports economic growth in the region. |

Lefin Paruvaparampil Chacko |
Meet Lefin Paruvaparampil Chacko, Vital Newcomer Excellence Award Winner. Lefin’s remarkable journey from India to Cape Breton is a story of resilience, determination, and community impact. After earning an engineering degree in India, Lefin made the bold decision to begin a new chapter in Cape Breton, enrolling at Cape Breton University in 2020. Lefin began his studies in India before coming to Cape Breton in 2021. He quickly became an integral part of campus life, embracing every opportunity with enthusiasm. Known for his infectious energy, Lefin even brought joy to the community as the CBU Caper mascot at various events.
After graduating, Lefin worked tirelessly to establish a meaningful life in Cape Breton. He first joined the Cape Breton Regional Chamber of Commerce, all while ensuring he could reunite his family in Canada. His dedication paid off, and his wife and daughter soon joined him. Lefin then secured a pivotal role as Project Coordinator/Engineer with Pomerleau Lindsay Healthcare Partners. In this capacity, he contributes to critical projects, including the Cape Breton Regional Hospital expansion and the construction of a state-of-the-art cancer center—initiatives that reflect his commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure and improving lives in his adopted community. Lefin’s journey doesn’t end with professional achievements. He recently purchased a home in Cape Breton and welcomed a second child, firmly rooting his family in the region. His story highlights the power of education, determination, and community connections, serving as a beacon of inspiration for other newcomers. |

Meet Lauren Tran, Vital Newcomer Excellence Award Winner. Lauren’s journey from Vietnam to Cape Breton showcases resilience, ambition, and community engagement. Arriving in 2019, she pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management at Cape Breton University (CBU), graduating in 2023 with the Silver Medal for the highest academic standing.
Starting as a student employee at Cabot Cape Breton, Lauren advanced to Retail Supervisor and, in 2024, transitioned to an Accounting Coordinator role. Her dedication and leadership within one of the world’s premier golf resorts reflect her passion for the tourism and hospitality industry. Beyond her career, Lauren volunteers with organizations like the Margaree Area Development Association, the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia, and Welcoming Networks in Inverness. She also represented Cape Breton at a national meeting with Tourism HR Canada, contributing to updates for their Supervisor Certificate program. She works with hundreds of businesses and community groups annually, championing every project from start to finish and making a significant impact on our community. Beyond work, Emily is a dedicated community advocate, serving on the YMCA of Cape Breton board, Cape Breton Connector Program Connectee, volunteering with local organizations, and is a past NextGen Unama’ki-Cape Breton Board Member. She also celebrates personal milestones, including buying her first home, marrying her partner, and welcoming a puppy. A proud resident of Inverness, Cape Breton, Olivia has been dedicated to supporting the local arts community since 2020. Starting as a volunteer, she worked her way up through various roles, including Events Assistant, before being appointed Program Director in 2024. At just 23, she brings energy, creativity, and a deep sense of local pride to her work.
In 2024, Olivia successfully organized and executed the Sunset Series music festival, which attracted over 2,000 attendees and featured Juno-winning artists alongside internationally recognized musicians. As the sole events employee at the Centre, her dedication, vision, and organizational skills were instrumental in the festival’s success. Olivia is passionate about fostering cultural experiences that celebrate the visual and performing arts, while building connections that unite Nova Scotia’s diverse communities. Her commitment to inclusivity and community building continues to inspire those around her and solidify her role as a vital leader in the arts. |

Meet Jeff MacNeil, Vital Employee Excellence Award Winner. For the past nine years, Jeff has been inspiring others and giving back through his work with the YMCA. Starting in 2015 with the YMCA of Cumberland, he raised significant funds to support community programs and helped launch essential housing and homelessness services. His leadership extended to the YMCA of Greater Moncton in 2019, where he further demonstrated his ability to secure vital resources.
Returning to his hometown of Glace Bay in 2022, Jeff joined the YMCA of Cape Breton and was quickly promoted to Manager of Fund Development. Since then, he has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for pressing needs, provided summer camp opportunities for over 150 children, and helped hundreds of Cape Bretoners access subsidized YMCA memberships. Beyond fundraising, Jeff has revitalized PEACE Week, championed employee engagement, and volunteers as a fill-in Spin Instructor. At 36, Jeff is a key leader in an organization with 250+ staff, making a lasting impact through his dedication to removing barriers and creating opportunities for all. |
Mairibeth Reilly - Harbourstone Enhanced Care |
Meet Mairibeth Reilly, Vital Employee Excellence Award Winner. Mairibeth Reilly is the Recreation and Volunteer Coordinator at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, where she leads the development, delivery, and evaluation of therapeutic recreation programs for 272 residents while overseeing volunteer services and fostering community engagement.
A passionate advocate for accessibility, inclusion, and mental health, she ensures that all programs are equitable and promotes mental well-being through staff education and evidence-based practices. As a certified Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) trainer, Mairibeth plays a key role in creating safe, person-centered care environments for individuals with dementia. In 2024, she was honored with the Cape Breton Partnership Safety First Youth Advocate Award for her leadership in youth advocacy and workplace safety. Mairibeth holds a Bachelor of Social Science in Public Policy and Economics and a Certificate in Health Communication and Aging from Mount Saint Vincent University, as well as a Therapeutic Recreation Diploma from NSCC. She is currently pursuing her Master of Adult Education with a concentration in Adult Education and Health at St. Francis Xavier University. Outside of work, Mairibeth enjoys spending time in nature through hiking and archery, and she expresses her creativity through watercolor painting. She resides in Cape Breton with her husband, Scott, and their goldendoodle, Finnigan. |

Meet Percy and Clary Ager, Vital Entrepreneur Excellence Award Winners. Percy and Clary are the inspiring founders of Ager Lane Flower Farm and Event Space located in beautiful Big Bras d’Or. Two years ago, they fell in love with Cape Breton at a friend's wedding, and one job offer later with this dream in their hearts embarked on a cross-country journey with their dog, Ginny with the hopes of transforming an old farm into a vibrant, inclusive community hub. They are dedicated to fostering a space where everyone—especially queer, Black, and disabled communities—feels welcome and celebrated.
Since arriving just 18 months ago, Percy and Clary have hosted seasonal sunflower u-picks, outdoor markets, concerts, and seed-saving workshops to encourage sustainable growth on the island. Through Ager Lane, they have brought fresh energy to Cape Breton, creating connections through events like outdoor concerts, photoshoots, plein air painting days, seed saving workshops, and even private dinners. The couple’s commitment to community extends to founding Nectar CB, a non-profit initiative to create social change through gardening while advancing farming and food security. They’re also preparing to launch a micro-Nordic spa for year-round relaxation. Beyond their physical contributions, Percy and Clary shine a spotlight on the beauty of Cape Breton through their social media accounts zucchini wives inspiring countless others with their journey. |

The centre provides invaluable first-job opportunities for youth, often serving as a stepping stone for those overcoming systemic barriers. By partnering with unions, universities, and career colleges, Clifford Street connects individuals to training, education, and meaningful employment. Many of its alumni have transitioned into careers in caring professions, with some contributing to reimagining training curricula for adult learners seeking new opportunities. While balancing the demands of two jobs, he has made a big impact on the community through his creativity, hard work, and passion for helping others. Recognizing an opportunity to bring people together for a great cause, Jordan revived and transformed the “Novem-Burger” into CB Burger Bash, a month-long celebration of local food, community spirit, and giving back. In 2023, the Burger Bash raised an impressive $7,750 for Caleb’s Courage, and with 3,254 burgers sold in 2024, another incredible donation is expected this year. Jordan’s vision and relentless effort have not only supported an amazing cause but also provided a platform for local businesses to thrive and for residents to reconnect in a meaningful way. As a talented photographer, Jordan also captures life’s most cherished moments, from weddings to community celebrations, preserving Cape Breton’s vibrancy and heart. His kindness, patience, and ability to connect with people shine through in every interaction. Meet Alyssa Young, Vital Excellence Award Winner. Alyssa is a Grade 12 student at Glace Bay High School. She is a shining example of leadership and community impact. For over a decade, she has been an integral volunteer at Town House, contributing to programs like Meals on Wheels, seniors’ initiatives, and countless community events. In 2023 and 2024, Alyssa served as Seniors Program Coordinator, creating active living programs and forging partnerships to bring meaningful events to life.
Passionate about the environment, Alyssa founded an environmental club at her high school, leading efforts to plant fruit trees and fundraise for families in need. She’s also an active volunteer with Bay It Forward, Youth-Peer Tutoring, and various artistic and community projects. As the 2023 recipient of the Town House Youth Impact Award, Alyssa’s dedication to improving lives is widely recognized. Balancing her academic excellence—she’s an honour roll student pursuing a High Skills Major in Art—with her volunteer work, Alyssa’s energy and creativity have inspired those around her.
